Comparative Studies of Electrophoretic Patterns of Serum Protein between Breast Milk-fed Infants and Cow¢¥s Milk-fed Infants in Korea

Abstract
Serum protein analysis by the method of paper :electrophoresis were made for the purpose of comparison of their changes by age between breast milk-fed
infants and cow¢¥s milk-fed infants of Korea.
79 cases of healthy breast milk-fed infants and 48
cases of cow¢¥s milk-fed infants ranging in age from
birth to 14 months, were included in this study. The results obtained were as follows:
1. Total serum protein
The values are increased gradually by age of months
rboi gip" of breast milk-fed and cow¢¥s milk-fed ~niants. and slightly higher in later group after 5 months of life(Table 1, Fig. 1).
2. Albumia
The concentrations are relatively constant through the age in both group, but slightly higher value noted in the breast milk-fed group(Table I , Fiu. I & 2).
3. Total globulin
They are increased gradually along with the age in both group and more pronounced in cow¢¥s milk-fed group(Table I. Fig. 1& 2).
4. GlobulinsElectrophoretic patterns
i. Alpha, lglobulin: constant through the age in both group, and no differences between both group (Table I[ , Fig. 3).
ii. A1pha2 lglobulin: only slightly elevated, gradually by age, and little differances between both group(Table Q , Fig. 3).
iii. Beta-globulin: no significant variations between groups and also by age(Table I(, Fig. 4).
iv. Gamma-globulin: these fractions decreased gradually during first 4 months and begin thereafter to increase with steep acclivity in both group, and conspicuously higher in cow¢¥s milk-fed group than breast milk-fed group(Table I(, Fig. 4).
